NIGK14026U Water Resources (part 2)

Volume 2017/2018
Education

MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
MSc Programme in Geography and Geoinformatics

Content

The course investigates dynamics of coupled flow and solute transport processes at different scales. Focus is on; (1) understanding geological heterogeneity and its impact on spreading of different tracers/pollutants in groundwater and how to use models to assess, understand, and quantify this, (2) the use of age tracers to estimate apparent groundwater ages and how to model groundwater ages using different methods, and (3) the integrated effects of topography, geology, groundwater flow, and subsurface denitrification on nitrate pollution of groundwater and stream water at the catchment scale. Laboratory experiments are used to analyze solute transport processes at the small scale, while real-world data on nitrate pollution is used at the catchment scale.
