Master in Film- and Media Studies,

2016-curriculum (Module 5) + 2013-curriculum (Module 4)

Content

Questions regarding how to define and understand media violence and its effects on audiences have led to much theoretical and methodological controversy within film and media studies. This course looks into these debates and invites students to investigate the relations between media violence and media audiences. The course explores how theoretical perspectives on film and media violence are interlinked with methodological considerations regarding quantitative and qualitative research designs for empirical studies of media audiences, and will introduce students to questions such as: What is media violence? What are the stylistics of media violence? Is media violence harmful to media audiences? How do different audiences understand and interpret media violence?

The course uses media violence as a focal point to explore how diverging theoretical understandings and methodological approaches have implications for the conclusions and results produced within audience and user studies. For their exam, students will undertake a small-scale empirical study from an audience or user perspective.
