NNMK13001U CANCELLED: Quaternary Landforms: Processes, Architecture and Sediments (2)

Volume 2016/2017
Education

MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience

Content

The course deals with the processes behind glacial landform formation and the internal architecture with examples from former and present glaciated terrain. A number of land forming processes  and their interaction with associated sediments is studied from modern glacial settings in Iceland, Svalbard and Greenland in order to analyze and evaluate the Danish glacial landscape with respect to internal architecture and its potential as base, filter and raw material source.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

It is the aim of the course that participants have achieved knowledge in a number of field and laboratory methods in the fields of sedimentology of glacial deposits, glacial tectonics, sub-fossil records and other biological remains from Danish key sections. On a basis of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and modern 3-D software from coring data and digital elevation models, participant should be able to construct geological models from former or present glaciated areas.

Skills

A wide spectrum of working methods may constitute the students´ “tool box”. Participants are expected to have acquired knowledge on the internal and external architecture of glacial landscapes.
Participants are expected to master a number of methods suitable for analyzing Quaternary landforms and sedimentary successions.
Participants are expected to demonstrate how to establish spatial geological models.

Competence

Participants are expected to
- understand the interaction between glacial landform transformation, climate change, instability of ice sheets and environmental change as registred in glacial and interglacial sediment successions.
- be able to manage GIS and 3-D software on a user level
- be able to read, understand and communicate scientific articles at a high    level
- analyze and understand complex sedimentological, structural-geological and glacio-morphological datasets
