Content

This course teaches state-of the art research related to the environment, society and development competence line. The course specifically focuses on theoretical and methodological approaches to development geography in the Global South. It is recommended that students also follow the course Environment, Society and Development (part 2).

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

  • The theoretical background for development geography including approaches inspired by modernization theory, dependency theory, and post-development critique(s)
  • Interaction of economic geography and development studies (including regional dynamics, clusters, and networks)
  • Interaction of social geography and development studies (including gender, participatory development, and mobilities)

 

Skills:

  • Read scientific literature related to the course subjects.
  • Apply, evaluate and analyse methods, theories and data related to the course subjects.
  • Rigorous use of scientific definitions and terms.
  • Give short, concise and well-illustrated oral presentations on the basis of scientific papers.
  • Write short, and concise reports aimed at colleagues within the professional world, public institutions and related research institutions.

 

Competences:

  • Identify theories and approaches within development studies and consider their potential adaptability to human geography approaches to global development
  • Incorporate methodological approaches from development studies in research proposals with ahuman geography content
  • Assess own professional geographical skills in relation to other disciplines

Oral examination, 20 minutes
The written assignment is prepared during the course and must be handed in prior to the exam week. The oral exam uses the written assignment as its point of departure. It includes the titles listed in the officially approved reading list. A combined grade is given after the oral exam.
