NIGK14041U Transformations of Cities and Landscapes: Globalisation and Local Strategies (Part 1)
MSc Programme in Geography and Geoinformatics
MSc Programme in Geography and Geoinformatics with a Minor
Subjects
The course provides an overview of how globalisation and the social, political and economic processes of nation-states, cities and the countryside are key drivers behind current geographical and spatial changes. The course focuses on the geographical consequences of the social, political and economic relations in contemporary urban and rural areas. The course has four main themes that together provide the students with a solid theoretical and analytical understanding of the processes of urban and regional transformations.

2. Urban and regional economic geography and development: The new economy, new spaces of production, economic restructuring and spatial change
3. Urban social geography: Focus on urban segregation, social polarisation and cohesion, gentrification and mobility.
4. Spatial planning: The shift from government to governance, strategic and spatial planning, networks and policy coalitions, new public management and planning strategies.
The form of teaching and work will be class teaching with active participation of students including group work etc.
