HKOB00026U Politics, Multi-culturalism and Immigration in Modern South Korea

With large numbers of migrant workers entering the country and increasing numbers of international marriages, South Korea is witnessing significant shifts in its population. This course investigates the impact this diversification is having upon South Korean society and culture. The course will begin by providing students with vital background to understanding the political system in South Korea and also recent events that have impacted the political scene on the Korean peninsula. The course will discuss the character of the last few governments that have had to deal with immigration. It also analyses recent South Korean governmental policy aimed at dealing with demographic shifts. The course will provide students with the theoretical framework they require to understand multi-culturalism and immigration in a Korean context. The classes will be taught in collaboration with Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea. It will consist of 14 real-time video lectures provided by specialists at Yonsei University. All learning materials will be in English and provided by Yonsei University, however, the course will be examined by teaching staff at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. At the end of the semester, selected outstanding students will be invited to join a vacation class taught at Yonsei University with airfare and lodging provided.
