CANCELED

This course will focus on a number of novels that raise the question of identity in a global context.  What happens to the subject when there is no simple answer to the question, “where are you from”?  What languages of identity exceed national and class belonging?  In what ways do these new formations challenge the shape of the novel as it has traditionally been told? We will be exploring this kind of complexity in two constellations:  first, by looking at novels that explore British Class Identity in light of upward mobility and second in light of a constellation of recent fictions that explore what it might mean to take on British identity as a newcomer to England.

Required Texts: Raymond Williams, Border Country; Alan Stillitoe, “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner”; John Braine, Room at The Top; Edward St Auburn, Mother’s Milk; Monica Ali, Brick Lane; Kazuo Ishiguro, A Pale View of the Hills; Zia Rahman, In Light of What We Know; Zadie Smith, NW
