HENB01099U English - Elective 1, topic 3: Introduction to Postcolonial Studies
Engelsk
The Introduction to Postcolonial Studies course introduces you to an exciting and thought-provoking way of looking at the world. In this course you will learn about ways of reading, thinking and talking about contemporary Anglophone literature and how this literature is engaged in an understanding of notions such as history, identity, colonisations of worlds, minds and imaginations, race and racism, feminism and hybridity, representation, discourse, migration and an ethics of responsibility. The course will expose you to a methodology and provide you with a toolkit of theoretical ideas that will help you to make sense of not only the postcolonial literature – from geographical locations such as the Caribbean, India and Africa – that we will be studying, but also to think critically about the constantly shifting world in which we all live.
Course books: John McLeod, Beginning Postcolonialism, 2nd ed. (2010) Caryl Phillips, Cambridge (1991), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun (2007), Sunjeev Sahota, The Year of the Runaways (2015) and a selection of poetry and theoretical texts uploaded on Absalon
