Content

The main objective of the course is to provide knowledge that will enable the students to participate in health provision at hospitals and health centres in developing countries.

  • introduction to the socio-cultural contexts of health in developing countries;
  • introduction to the most important diseases affecting the populations in developing countries;
  • introduction to sexual and reproductive health issues, as well as child health and nutrition.  
     

Emphasis is on the biomedical and clinical aspects of the diseases facing people in developing countries. The main diseases will be discussed in more detail with emphasis on clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment. Other conditions such as filariasis, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, mental diseases, non-communicable diseases, eye-diseases and skin-diseases are also presented. The health problems relating to urbanization and water supply will be discussed as well as the provision of health in emergencies and to refugees and how to avoid doing harm in the post phase of an intervention.

Knowledge

  • Describe major health issues in developing countries such as specific diseases as well as influences due to the socio-cultural context: specific diseases, communicable as well as non-communicable, issues related to water and sanitation and sexual and reproductive health

Skills

  • Handle health provision at hospitals and health centres in developing countries.
  • Handle clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of major health issues as well as a number of less well known tropical diseases.
     

Competencies

  • Critically evaluate their own and colleagues practice in hospitals and health centers in developing countries reflect on how to ensure to avoid harm and participate in developing their own practice.
