SMEA09068U International Summer School in Internal Medicine - Course 1
Master of Science in Medicine
The summer school will provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of the most common diseases and treatments within internal medicine. Invited speakers will share insights into the latest research and possible future developments and treatments. The focus will be on participation and dialogue, including different innovative educational methods intended to optimize learning outcome. The objective of the course is to provide a thorough understanding of both acute and non-acute conditions and thus make you more prepared for life as a junior doctor.
The summer school consist of two courses of each two weeks. The following topics are taught in course 1:
Nephrology, endocrinology, gastrointestinal diseases and infectious diseases.

Criteria for exam assesment
To obtain the assessment passed the student must demonstrate the following abilities at a sufficient level:
Knowledge
- Nephrology
- Explain acute and chronic kidney failure.
- Show a basic understanding of dialysis and common electrolyte disorders.
- Endocrinology
- Show a basic understanding of thyroid disorders.
- Show a basic understanding of diagnostics, treatment, and pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- Gastrointestinal diseases
- Explain the major diseases in gastrointestinal medicine.
- Infectious diseases
- Explain common causes and treatment of urinary tracts
infections, gastroenteritis, and sepsis.
- Explain common causes and treatment of urinary tracts

Skills
- Nephrology
- Diagnose kidney failure.
- Knowing when to contact a nephrologist for specialized treatment.
- Endocrinology
- Having a diagnostic approach in patients with abnormal thyroid hormones and patients suspected to having diabetes.
- Gastrointestinal diseases
- Having a diagnostic approach in patients with symptoms such as diarrhea or bloody stools.
- Diagnose liver failure and knowing when to contact a
hepatologist for specialized treatment.
Competencies
- Nephrology
- Initiate basic treatment for electrolyte disorders and fluid treatment for the dehydrated patient.
- Endocrinology
- Initiate basic treatment for patients with ketoacidosis.
- Infectious diseases
- Initiate treatment for sepsis, urinary tract infections, and gastroenteritis.
