SFOK15006U Health Aspects of Air Pollution

Volume 2015/2016
Education

MSc in Public Health Science
BSc in Public Health Science

Content

The course describes exposure, toxicology and epidemiology of exposures to air pollution from outdoor and indoor emission sources. Assessment of hazards from exposure to air pollution exposures is for a large part based on review of available data on exposure, toxicology and epidemiology by international expert committees. It describes an integrated approach to hazard identification of environmental exposures, using information on exposure assessment, toxicology and epidemiology. The curriculum follows the approach developed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) for classification of carcinogens as an example of international hazard identification. The curriculum encompasses 1) types and health effects of constituents in air pollution, 2) exposure assessment of air pollution, 3) use of cell cultures and animal models in environmental health assessment (3R and mechanisms of action), 4) epidemiology of air pollution exposures, and 5) IARC classification system of carcinogens.
