We apply the concepts and methods used in the production and characterization of solids and their surfaces. Examples from modern materials research. Topics include: description of crystalline materials, doped structures, thin films, liquid crystals, anisotropic materials etc. Characterization by means of diffraction, spectroscopy and electron and tunneling microscopy. Introduction to vibrational, electrical and optical properties, including static and dynamic effects.

Learning Outcome

The materials science student will be able to:

1. Explain design principles for functional materials.

2. Explain the principles of the most important tools used to characterize solid state materials.

3. Apply materials chemistry and materials physics concepts to examine and assess and discuss the content of a research paper.

4. Present research papers, as stated in 3), in written as well as in oral form.


The student will also

1. Use structural databases to extract knowledge about and compare related crystal structures.

2. Use structure visualization software to visualize and compare crystal structures.

3. Use design principles of functional materials to discuss and suggest design routes to obtain desired properties of simple systems.


You will learn about the most important classes of solid state materials, and you will be familiar with some of the most important examples of materials.

You will learn about the possibilities to compute properties of solid state materials.

You will be acquainted with a range of research groups interested in materials research at the University of Copenhagen.

Type of assessment
Written assignment, 2 weeks
Oral examination, 30 min (no preperation time)
The exam consists of two parts:
A) A written report including a introduction, discussion and assessment of 1-2 recent research papers. The assignment will also include questions on the topics addressed in the course. Topics for the assignment are negotiated between the course responsible and the students. The research papers are chosen by the course responsible.
The two elements are weighed equally in the final grade.

B) An oral examination which consists of a presentation of the report, followed by a discussion of the report and its relation to the course material.

The written report and the oral exam carry equal weight in the assessment.

Similar to the ordinary exam. The oral re-examination requires that the written report has been handed in 2 weeks before the re-examination.

Criteria for exam assesment

The assessment is based on the intended learning outcomes of the course. The written report and the oral exam carry equal weight in the assessment.
