The course focuses on the international systems for the protection of human rights.

Its purpose is to make students familiar with the institutional mechanisms and substantive provisions in force at the global and regional level to protect human rights.

The class will examine the human rights system existing within the framework of the United Nations, introduce the European, American and African regional human rights regimes, and consider possibilities of developing new global human rights tools.

Substantive examples – mainly dealing with the problem of terrorism – will be considered to explore the operation of human rights in practice.

Learning Outcome

The objective of the course is to enable the students to:

- Present the comprehensive body of international human rights law;

- Explain the institutional framework of different international and regional human rights protection systems, including UN complaints mechanisms and the Council of Europe;

- Explain the most important doctrines and interpretation techniques of human rights bodies through the study of case law;

- Identify and discuss challenges to and shortcomings of contemporary international human rights law;

- Explain and critically discuss issues of particular, contemporary relevance in the field of international human rights law such as the rights of individuals suspected of being involved in terrorism;

- Communicate and formulate her/his knowledge and arguments professionally and linguistically correct and in a structured and coherent way

Students must be able to read, understand, write and speak "everyday" (non-technical) English.
This course is based on interactive lectures, where the instructor presents a topic and introduces students to the development of a particular area of law and to the substance of the law. Students are required to read and study materials in preparation of the class.
The methods of instruction for this course require students that are curious, motivated and willing to participate. Designing a course that uses such methods is more demanding for the lecturers but delivers much more to students and is generally more fun.
It is essential in this course that students come prepared to class and are willing to participate in creating a mutual learning environment.
If you follow this course International Human Rights Law you cannot follow the courses: European Court of Human Rights and "Den Europæiske Menneskerettighedskonvention og dansk ret" It is only possible to follow and be examined in one of these courses during the course of study.

Exam registration requirements

In order to attend the oral examination, it is a prerequisite to hand in the synopsis before the specified deadline.
The deadline is agreed upon with the course lecturer.
