HFIK03802U FILO, Module10: Freely Chosen Topic in Phenomenology and Philosophy of Mind: Perception, Illusion and Hallucination

Volume 2015/2016
Education

Master in Philosophy

Content

Perception is a central theme in contemporary philosophy of mind. Perception was also of crucial importance to classical phenomenologists such as Husserl and Merleau-Ponty, among others. While much analytic discussion has focused on the so-called arguments from illusion and hallucination, the phenomenologists have tended to downplay or even ignore these. But that does not mean that phenomenologists – whether classical or contemporary – have nothing to say about illusion and hallucination. On the contrary, classical phenomenologists have had much to say about perceptual error. Moreover, contemporary phenomenologists such as Walter Hopp and A. D. Smith have attempted to relate the phenomenological accounts to the ongoing debates within analytic philosophy of perception. In this course, we will read key analytic texts (e.g. by Brewer, Crane, and Searle) on perception, hallucination and illusion, as well as classical and contemporary phenomenological texts (e.g. by Hopp, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, and Smith).
