This course is designed to assist postgraduate students acquire the variety of research skills needed to identify, initiate and complete the writing of their MA thesis in any subject connected to history, society and culture.  The course is intended to support the work students do for their own MA course programme and to equip them with the range of practical and theoretical skills needed to undertake an extended piece of scholarly writing in their given humanities subject.  It explores methodology, practical scholarship, and particular areas of interest for the students in the group.

The course aims to give students undertaking their first independent research insight into the wide range of sources available to them and the means to survey and assess them.  It also seeks to equip them with understanding of the theoretical frameworks, many drawn from social, human sciences and literary studies, that will inform existing scholarship on their chosen thesis subject.  The course is intended to give students a clear sense of historical developments, as well as recent academic debates and methodologies; to develop analytic, research and writing skills in social and cultural history and related subjects by examining particular texts, including films, photographs and written materials.
