HENK03910U English - Free topic 12: Modern and Contemporary British writing (exam form A,B,C)

Volume 2015/2016
Content

This course offers a survey of British literature across a range of genres (poetry, drama, fiction) from the 1950s until the present day.  As well as developing familiarity with the major currents of British writing in this period, you will be introduced, through a combination of close-reading and theoretical approaches, to British literature as discipline and institution, and to British literary perspectives on issues of identity (gender, class, race/ethnicity, nationality, etc.); genre, modernity / postmodernity, and so on.

The books you need to buy for this course, in the order that we will study them, are:

Michael Morpurgo, Warhorse (1982)

Jez Butterworth, Jerusalem (2009)

Ian McEwan, Atonement (2001)

Michael Frayn, Copenhagen (1998)

Monica Ali, Brick Lane (2003)

Martin Amis, London Fields (1989)

Julian Barnes, The Sense of an Ending (2011)

Copies of each should be available in the bookshop and you can also acquire them from various online retailers.  Other reading material will be made available via Absalon and in class.  For a very useful introduction to some of the ideas in critical theory that we will be discussing on the course, you could take a look at the latest edition of Peter Barry's excellent Beginning Theory.
