The course ‘Danish Society - A Sociological Perspective’ will present in depth analyses of key institutions in Danish society. Besides selected topics such as the labour market, national health and care policies, gender, ethnicity, climate change, migration, aging and Danish identity will be analyzed in lectures and readings. The students will become acquainted with the most important institutions and political values in Danish society and they will meet some of the best scholars in these various fields.

Learning Outcome

This course is designed to for foreign students so that they become acquainted with sociological theories and empirical studies covering political culture and institutional - as well as alternative – forms of life in Denmark. In this respect the aim is to develop a critical understanding of the underlying values and political ideas in the Danish society, and how the society is continually re-shaping itself. More broadly, the course aims to draw the students’ attention to the complexities, problems and ambiguities of the "Danish Model". In addition to a basic understanding of the areas of Danish society covered in the course, the students should be able to exercise sociological reflection, and demonstrate skills in formulating research questions concerning sociological issues related to the functioning of Danish Society.

Size: A Free written take-home essay of maximum 15 pages of 2400 characters each page (incl. spaces). If written by a group, the essay may be 50 % of 2400 characters each page longer per additional student.
