 The aim of this course is to present and explore different social scientific perspectives on intentionality, loosely understood as the manner in which human consciousness is directed or oriented towards particular objects of attention, be that other subjects, oneself, or material and immaterial things. Based on a mixture of recent and well as more classic anthropological, psychological and philosophical readings (Husserl, Freud, Jackson, Rapport, and Mahmoud) as well as a recent anthropological monograph, the course is organized around a number of key sub-themes pertaining to the broader question of intentionality, including agency, individuality, affect, desire, intimacy, introspection, hope, faith, guilt, and doubt.
Learning Outcome

After having successfully completed the course, the student should have

  • Obtained an overview of social scientific perspectives on about intentionality.
    • Become familiar with newer anthropological perspectives on intentionality and associated sub-themes.
      • Become able to identity different kinds of intentional practices and to apply relevant theories for analysing these.

Essay.
Length: Min. 21.600 - max. 26.400 keystrokes for an individual essay. For group exams plus an additional min. 6.750 - max. 8.250 keystrokes per extra group member.

The essay assignments can be written individually or in groups of max. 4 people. Read more about the rules for group examinations in the

The examination essay must address a relevant topic from the course and must include literature from the course syllabus.

A new essay with a revised problem statement must be submitted at the announced date. The students are automatically registered for the 1. re-exam.
