The aim of this course is to present and explore different social scientific perspectives on intentionality, loosely understood as the manner in which human consciousness is directed or oriented towards particular objects of attention, be that other subjects, oneself, or material and immaterial things. Based on a mixture of recent and well as more classic anthropological, psychological and philosophical readings (Husserl, Freud, Jackson, Rapport, and Mahmoud) as well as a recent anthropological monograph, the course is organized around a number of key sub-themes pertaining to the broader question of intentionality, including agency, individuality, affect, desire, intimacy, introspection, hope, faith, guilt, and doubt. |
Learning Outcome
After having successfully completed the course, the student should have
- Obtained an overview of social scientific perspectives on about
intentionality.
- Become familiar with newer anthropological perspectives on
intentionality and associated sub-themes.
- Become able to identity different kinds of intentional practices and to apply relevant theories for analysing these.
- Become familiar with newer anthropological perspectives on
