CURATING URBAN DIGITAL ART

Uddannelse
Moderne Kultur
Kursusindhold

The course will introduce students to the emerging territory of urban digital art through the lens of curatorial practice, as found in initiatives with for example video art in public space, urban screens, context-specific screenings, architectural projection mapping, media architecture, nuit blanche festivals, new media connectivity projects and permanent urban digital galleries. The course will provide students with an overview of the methodologies, philosophies and practices that have guided this territory, from the early initiatives with expanded cinema in the public domain in the late 1960s to contemporary installations with urban software art. The course will discuss the aesthetics of urban digital art; consider the contextualization of these artistic practices within “the media city” and related urban theories; discuss the renewed role of the curator in relation to established ideas of the curatorial; and consider the dispositif of the exhibition while problematizing concepts of  ‘site specificity’, ‘temporality,’ ‘immateriality,’ ‘event,’ ‘spectacle,’ ‘participation,’ ‘embodiment’ and ‘subjectivity’. Students will gain competences in exhibition theory and practice in order to independently be able to conceptualize curatorial ideas for urban digital art, formulate curatorial intentions, and critically evaluate the current issues of concern. The course will be based on a combination of lectures, exercises with student presentations, and field trips.
