Spatial econometric analysis and spatial data management

3-7 August 2015

The course will cover both the theoretical and practical application of spatial data management and spatial econometric model estimation. The course will address the following issues:

  • How to explore data in GIS and construct sophisticated spatial covariates
  • How to identify spatial autocorrelation and how to correct for it
  • How to model spatial continues models using the classical spatial autoregressive models, the spatial panel data models and the spatial generalized Additive Model
  • How to model spatial discrete choice using spatial sorting models

The course will explore these issues through both theoretical lectures and practical application of spatial data management and model estimation, while also illustrating how GIS can be used as a tool to formulate and answer new and important research questions.

Learning Outcome

This course aims to provide solid background to PhD students and young researchers interested in the analysis of spatial data with particular reference to economic applications.

participants will be required to acquaint themselves with GIS and spatial econometric models by reading the course literature and taking time to look into QGIS and R.

Criteria for exam assesment

To register for the course, follow this link: http://ifro.ku.dk/english/research/phdstudies/phdcourses/phdcourseaug2015/registration/

The course will be closed for registration by July 1, 2015. stating the project title, objectives, theoretical background, research methods, country of field work, stage of PhD project (i.e. recently commenced, pre-fieldwork, post-fieldwork, etc.) and how attending this course will benefit their project.

Participants will be required to submit a course paper after the 5 day intensive course in order to qualify for the 5 ECTS credits. The course paper should be no more than 3,000 words and be handed in by September 15, 2015. Participant papers should address a spatial econometric issue in their research. Further guidance on the paper will be emailed to the participants upon admission. The focus of the paper should be on:

  1. describing the issue to be investigated, and
  2. presenting a spatial econometric model estimate.

Participants should frame their papers according to the relevant stage in their research process in order to maximize the relevance of the paper to their individual project outcomes and milestones (i.e. participants in earlier stages of research may find it more relevant to discuss the literature in relation to research design, while those in the final stages may find it more relevant to use the paper to draft an article). Due to the limited word count, less relevant background and introduction to the project should be avoided, allowing for a more thorough discussion related to the spatial econometric issue. This will also allow for greater feedback during the course.
