NIGK14045U Remote Sensing of the Bio-Geosphere ( Part 1)

Volume 2014/2015
Education
MSc Programme in Geography and Geoinformatics
Content

This competence-line course teaches state-of the art research within advanced physical principles in Earth Observation (EO) of the global bio-geosphere. Software based analysis tools will be tested and learned in a number of practical PC-based hands-on exercises during the course.

Learning Outcome

 Knowledge:
The overall aim is to provide to the students an understanding of relevant theories and methodologies necessary to select appropriate analysis tools within the broad context of remote sensing of the bio-geosphere. The theoretical background for monitoring various components of the bio-geosphere will be discussed during classes and software based analysis tools will be tested in a number of practical exercises. The course includes an introduction to data gateway download, pre-processing and analysis of various state-of-the-art remote sensing systems. Focus will be on theory and methods of optical and thermal infrared remote sensing (physical principles, electromagnetic radiation, atmospheric correction, image processing techniques etc.) and applications hereof. Remote sensing applications cover remote sensing of the marine environment (lake and coastal monitoring, Sea surface temperature monitoring, ocean productivity), remote sensing of snow and ice (snow indices, monitoring of glacier/ocean ice), vegetation productivity (vegetation indices, plant water stress, net primary production) and remote sensing of the atmosphere (tropospheric trace gas concentrations). Time series parameterization, long term trend analysis based upon multi-year datasets are introduced as tools for analysing the impact from climate change and human influence.

Skills:

  • read scientific literature related to the course subjects.
  • apply, evaluate and analyse methods, theories and data related to the course subjects.
  • use correct scientific definitions and terms.
  • write a short, concise report aimed at colleagues within the business world, public institutions or research institutions.

Competences:

  • identify and work out proposal for solving complex geographical problems using theory, data and methods
  • conduct and carry out large scale field work, data collection and subsequent analyses
  • access own professional geographical skills in relation to other subjects
