Content
The course deals with the processes responsible for the formation of ore deposits and the important features of mineralized environments, including geologic setting, ore mineralogy, alteration patterns, geochemistry, and fluid-rock interactions.
The focus is on the geochemistry, mineralogy and petrology of ore deposits formed by igneous, metamorphic and hydrothermal alteration processes.
In addition, the course presents the techniques necessary for resource evaluation with a focus on applied ore petrography.
Learning Outcome
Knowledge:
- An overview of the origins of ore bodies and their likely occurrence and physical form, their ore microstructures and textures.
- Theoretical and practical aspects of the characteristics and genesis of the main types of high-temperature mineral deposits of the Earth’s crust
- Macroscopic, microscopic and analytical chemical methods for their study
Skills:
- Description and determination of ore and gangue minerals in hand specimen
- Knowledge of the main types of high-temperature igneous, metamorphic and hydrothermal mineral deposits of the Earth’s crust.
- Basic knowledge of reflected light microscopy in the determination of ore minerals and the description and interpretation of ore microstructures and textures.
- Practical knowledge in the use of BSE, EDS and WDS to identify sulphide and oxide minerals.
- Basic knowledge of the currently employed geochemical and geophysical exploration techniques and mining/ore beneficiation practice.
Competences:
- Knowledge of methods used in the characterization of high-temperature ore deposits
- Knowledge of approach to perform a basic study of a given mineralization
- Written and oral presentation of theories of formation of ore deposits from available literature
