The course gives students a geographic, material and historical overview of the period between ca. 6000 and 3000 BCE. Theoretical approaches to relevant questions such as urbanisation, development of hierarchy and specialisation etc. will be discussed. The knowledge about archaeology, economy and socio-political development is another goal of the course. The effects of mass production of pottery, importance of cult and the invention of writing (between other elements) will be main points and students should be able to discuss the different explanations.
