Assessment is an essential component of the language teaching pedagogy because it is used to guide instruction, follow learners’ progress, and evaluate achievement. Therefore, the main aim of this course will be to equip students with the skills, knowledge and principles necessary to understand and construct different types of language assessment procedures. The course will provide guidelines on (1) the design of assessments within the classroom, (2) the necessary tools to analyze and improve assessments, and (3) the methods to align assessments to externally imposed standards (e.g. Common European Framework of Reference or Danish public school objectives Fælles Mål). Assessment is situated both within the classroom and the larger social context, so the course will also draw attention to the educational and social impact of assessment, learners’ preparation, and the practical aspects of using assessment for learning.
