Content

Enabling the student to:

  • understand the theoretical backgrounds for the various health economic disciplines,
  • read and make use of scientific articles, where advanced health economy is applied,
  • see health economic challenges in an international perspective.

The main focus is the financing and structure of the medical sector, the primary and the secondary health care sector. This includes theory and practice relating to both the demand- and supply-side, and problems related to decision making based on local budgeting.

Learning Outcome

Ex. on topics:

Primary sector e.g.:

Should user fees be implemented in the Danish user fees for services that are currently free of charge in General Practice? Supplier induced demand.

Secondary sector e.g.:

Analysis of the financing and incitement structure in the Danish health care sector.

Alternative financing methods of the health care system, e.g. use of Medical Savings accounts.

Medical sector e.g.:

Reimbursement and pricing of pharmaceuticals in Denmark. Decision-makers and influencers.

Health Technology Assessment and its use in reimbursement decisions. Trade channels for market entry. Reimbursement systems. Pricing structure, trends and development.

The cost structure of research-based pharmaceuticals and reasons for price regulation.

Types of price regulation and their consequences. Use of HTA.

’Health insurances’ (based on a Danish perspective with focus on e.g. moral hazard); ’Access to health and health care services’; ’Lifestyle models’ (Grossman); ’Finaincing of healt care systems in an international perspective’.

Oral examination, 20 min under invigilation
A written seminar paper and a oral presentation for the others participans at the seminar.
Exam registration requirements
Attendance on the seminar. The mandatory commitment paper and seminar paper have been handed in at deadline.
