NSCPHD1233 Combined Workshop/PhD course in genomics based breeding in forest trees
Genomics-based breeding of livestock, vegetables and other agricultural spe-cies is already an on-going and implemented discipline. Marker based breeding has particularly interesting possibilities for forest trees – especially because of the long timelines necessary to obtain phenotypic evaluation for the majority of traits in trees and the substantial costs associated with making these evalua-tions. At the same time, next generation sequencing has revolutionized the sci-ence of genetics in recent years – making the simultaneous generation and gen-otyping of tens of thousands of DNA markers a realistic opportunity, even in non-model species like trees. The combined workshop/PhD course is arranged by ADAPCAR (http://www.nordicforestresearch.org/adapcar/).

The target groups are active forest tree breeders as well as PhD students within the area of forest genetics and related areas. The intention is that all the partici-pants get state-of-the-art knowledge about genomics-based breeding during the first day, which is the workshop for both target groups. The following days will be for the participants in the PhD course only and will be a mix of hands-on ex-ercises with computer and short introductions/presentations in relation to the topics included in the teaching.
Articles and lecture notes. All course material will be available through a re-stricted web site. |
