NKEK12009U Proteins on a Chip

Volume 2013/2014
Education
MSc Programme in Nanoscience
Content

Biochips are becoming very popular and are now adapted to routine applications in laboratories. In this course, we propose an introduction to the field, which can be of interest to any students willing to measure molecular interactions using commercial biochips or design new biochips. An introduction to standard modes of detection and adapted setups for High-Throughput Screening will also be given.

The course will contain plenary lectures, lab exercises and literature work

There are several assignments:
1- lab reports
2- journal club (oral presentation of an article - 20 mn- and acting as opponent for two other articles presented during the course)
3- literature report about one topic related to the course

PhD students can take a 5 ECTS version of the course corresponding to assignments 1 & 2.

Learning Outcome

The overall goal of the course is to learn and understand how do the main categories of membrane proteins function. Completing the course the student is expect to have acquired basic principles about:

Knowledge:
Interface protein and surface
Protein Immobilization strategies
Surface based techniques for the investigation of proteins
Protein arrays: classical and novel technologies.

Skills:
Run classical experiments with immobilized proteins.
Discuss scientific articles dealing with use or investigation of proteins

Competencies
Explain the advantages and inconvenients of protein immobilization
Describe several types of immobilization strategies with their specificities
Describe the principle of several surface based techniques

Based on reviews and articles
The course is open for Master and PhD students from various educations: Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Human Biology, Biophysics, Pharmacy, Medicine
The course is composed of lectures and lab exercises in addition to literature work.
25 hours of lecture and exercises / tutorial. ; approx 15 hours of lab exercises + lab reports; literature report
Lab exercises at the Bioanotechnology and Nanomedicine Laboratory (fluorescence microscope, biacore instrument and other biophysical techniques). The students will have to design part of the experimental protocol before the experiments and to write lab reports for each exercise.
Literature work is composed of critical reading of articles during the course (and oral presentation of one of them) and of one report reviewing a topic related to the course.
