Content
To teach the students the fundamentals of carbohydrate structure and chemistry as well as advanced topics, such as protecting group chemistry that enable the selective transformations of monosaccharides, various approaches to the synthesis of the glycosidic linkage, oligosaccharide synthesis, carbohydrates as chiral pool and renewable resource (green chemistry), glycobiology and artificial vaccines.
Learning Outcome
Competences:

  • Be able to predict carbohydrate structure, behavior and reactions
  • To be able to plan a synthesis using carbohydrates as starting materials 

Skills:

  • Can give an exhaustive description of carbohydrate structure, conformation and stereochemistry.
  • Can suggest methods for analysis and purification of carbohydrates.

Knowledge:

  • Most common and useful protection groups that are used to protect carbohydrates. 
  • Familiarity with the most important modifications and functionalizations of the sugar ring. 
  • Thorough knowledge about glycosylation methods and strategy. 
  • To be familiar with glycoconjugate structure and biosynthesis 
  • To have knowledge about glycobiology
