Content
The focus of the course is nutrient
requirements during different life stages with emphasis on nutrient
requirement during the growth phases. Lectures and practicals will
contain topics such as 1) Nutrition and pregnancy, 2) Nutrition and
foetal development, 3) Nutrition and growth (growth phases:
infancy, weaning, early childhood, late childhood and adolescence).
Learning Outcome
The main objective of the course is to
give the student an understanding of the relation between
nutrition, growth, development and health from conception to
adolescence.
After completing the course the students should be able to:
Knowledge:
- Describe basic principles for growth and development in different life stages
- Describe relations between nutrients and growth and development
- Define methods to assess nutrition status in different life stages
- Reflect upon nutritional requirements in different life stages
- Refer to nutrient related diseases in different life stages
- Refer to theories about early nutrition/growth and later diseases
Skills:
- Discuss the mechanism behind relations between nutrients, growth and development
- Choose correct methods to evaluate nutritional status in different life stages
- Assess the rationale for nutritional requirements and recommendations in different life stages
- Explain relation between nutrition and specific nutrient related diseases
- Manage simple methods like growth charts for evaluation of growth
Competences:
- Discuss the principles for calculation of nutrient requirements in different life stages
- Make recommendations to prevent nutrient related diseases
- Assess and explain theories about early nutrition/growth and later diseases

Academic qualifications
The participants are
expected to have some knowledge of human nutrition before signing
up for this course
Teaching and learning methods
The course is based on
topics with coherent blocks of lectures and group practicals
containing a survey of existing literature and a written reports
including one on a self-selected topic. These reports will be used
as background for the oral examination of each individual
student.

This course can with
advantage be taken together with the course LLEK10251 nternational
Nutrition and Health.
