Buddhism, originally indigenous to the Indian subcontinent, spread from there to South, South-East, Central, and East Asia, and since the 19th century also to Europe and America. Over the two and a half millennia of its existence and along the path of its travels, Buddhism has undergone many transformations, and it has exerted considerable influence on and adapted itself to indigenous cultures and religions in these areas. In our course we will look at the origins and trace some of its transformations up to modern times. After a brief introduction to Indian Buddhism we will present the histories of Buddhism and case studies of its interactions with other cultures in China, Tibet, Thailand, Japan and Indonesia.

India, Kenneth Zysk, Jan-Ulrich Sobisch:

  1. The Buddha in context: Indian philosophical trends of his time
  2. Pan-Indianism, inclusivism, syncretism, and symbiosis: models of co-existence in India

China, Bent Nielsen:

  1. On the Immortality of the Soul - Early Debates between Buddhist Apologetics and the Chinese Intellectual Elite
  2. The Buddhist Sangha vs. the Chinese Dynastic State

Southeast Asia, Cynthia Chou:

  1. The coming of Buddhism to Southeast Asia, and more recent developments and practices (including the "syncretist" nature of Thai Buddhism)
  2. The case of Thammakay (Dhammakaya) in Thailand (including issues of globalization, commercialization, mass movements, etc.)
  3. Buddhism in other parts of  Southeast Asia, such as its role in politics in Burma in the modern era (both the colonial and the post-colonial periods)

Japan, Christoph Kleine (University of Leipzig) October 3-4. (date fixed):

  1. Buddhism and the indigenous cults of Japan
  2. The ‘practical atheism’ of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism

Tibet, Jan-Ulrich Sobisch:

  1. The assimilation of Indian Buddhism in Tibet
  2. Gender struggle: modern Buddhist nuns and full ordination in Asia
