HPOA00731U Portugisisk - Det brasilianske samfund: Debatter og stemmer
Portuguese - Debates and voices in Brazilian society
What social and political issues are Brazilians talking about today? Debates often involve questions of specific groups within society (indigenous groups, immigrants, Blacks), political reforms, urban and regional development, and the like. What these debates often have in common are question of social inclusion/exclusion and identity. The course refers to debates and “voices” because not all speakers have the same power and therefore not all voices are heard to the same extent. Therefore, we will pay attention to a wide range of voices representing a variety of viewpoints. In this way we will be able to see that the very way Brazil is perceived depends on which voices are prominent.
This course, taught in English, will take a problem-based approach to topics such as the future of the Amazon, regional disparities, corruption and violence, the challenges of mega-cities, and ethnic relations. Although the starting point is contemporary Brazil (sociological, cultural, economic and political perspectives), the students will learn how to trace the historical background of these debates.
