Content

This course is designed to introduce  students  to spoken Sanskrit. The main purpose of the course is to help students to develop Sanskrit pronunciation and conversational skills in Sanskrit and to introduce them to contemporary Sanskrit composition. The stress is made on interactive activities and oral presentations. The medium of instruction and communication between the participants and teacher is predominantly Sanskrit.

The main focus-areas of the course are:

Grammar:

Basic grammatical forms such as tense (past, present and future), moods, active and passive voices, and cases will be introduced so that the students can make simple sentences and dialogs in the form of day-to-day conversation. 

Vocabulary:                                                                        

The students will learn contemporary Sanskrit vocabulary and expressions by reading articles from Sanskrit magazines and newspapers, etc. They will practice to retell short texts and make their own sentences with common verbs, nouns and adjectives from the articles. They will also recite subhāṣitas, and hence gets a chance to learn some metrics and get in touch with classical Sanskrit.

Listening comprehension and Sanskrit conversation.

Listening to subhāṣitas, short stories, Sanskrit news bulletins and speeches in Sanskrit will develop listening comprehension skills. Audiovisual materials will be presented so that students become acquainted with different accents and styles of delivery.

Sanskrit composition:

Students will be encouraged to write their own essays and short stories in Sanskrit and present them orally to the class

As a result, the students will develop skills of using the language on a regular basis, will achieve fluency in reading and speaking Sanskrit, and will learn to understand spoken Sanskrit and to write short essays.
