Multiculturalism can be conceptualized either institutionally as policies of ethnic minority protection and cultural rights or as lived and practiced coexistence in everyday life. It is widely agreed that Southeast Asia is a culturally and linguistically very heterogeneous area. The question is: How can minor cultures and groups be protected and how can they participate in the common good on equal terms? Is multiculturalism a universal value? This course provides a history of multicultural policies in colonial and postcolonial Southeast Asia and looks also into people’s movements for ethnic and religious minority rights.
