Haunted by Intertextuality: Rewriting and Writing Back

Kursusindhold

Maori writer Witi Ihimaera reworked some of Pakeha Katherine Mansfield's short stories; Dominican Jean Rhys gave Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre a Caribbean prequel; Indian American Bharati Mukherjee scrambled up the alphabet of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter, and South Africa's J.M. Coetzee gave Robinson Crusoe a new voice in Foe. These are just some of the best-known textual doubles in a postcolonial context. Less evident perhaps is the rewriting stance evinced by Jamaica Kincaid in Among Flowers. This course will explore the ambivalent connotations of rewritings which encompass both homage and menace. We will confront the epistemic violence of quotations, the subversions inherent in versions and analyse the implications of pens used as swords and scissors
