This course uses thematic approaches in order to explore social and political change in theU.S. in the 1960s and 1970s. The aim of the course will be to examine, understand, and explain the factors and issues at play which encouraged the transformation of American society and politics and arguably led to the establishment of the current era. To come to grips with social and attitudinal change, topics covered will include the growth of consumer society and youth culture, the extension of rights to traditionally marginalized Americans, the development of the counterculture and permissive society, the re-emergence of religion and reaction. Lastly the course will explore how these factors impacted on and were impacted by politics and policy.
