HENK0361BU Engelsk - Frit emne: Literature and sculpture in the 19th century
Literature and sculpture in the 19th century
This course sets out to map the interrelationship between literature and sculpture in nineteenth-century literature. We shall look at poetry, prose, and fiction and explore such topics as the interrelationship between literary and sculptural form, ekphrasis, sculpture and travel writing, aspects of the Medusan and the Pygmalian, and the depiction of the sculptor in fiction. My choice of texts will range from Romantic poetry and art criticism to mid-century novels and will certainly comprise the following:
Lord Byron, Childe Harold’s Pilrimage IV
Poems and prose by P.B. Shelley and John Keats
Poems by Felicia Hemans, E.B Browning, A.C. Swinburne
Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Marble Faun (1860)
Henry James, Roderick Hudson (1875)
