HENB0T141U Engelsk - Valgfag 1 - Introduktion til britiske studier A: The Gothic Novel from Walpole to Stoker
Elective 1: Introduction to British Studies A: The Gothic Novel from Walpole to Stoker
This course explores the genre of the Gothic novel from its rise in the mid eighteenth century till Bram Stoker’s Dracula of 1897, incorporating every aspect of modernity from typewriters to train timetables. It addresses the Gothic as a hybrid genre, dealing with issues of otherness, disease, blood-lines, archetypal figures, science and elements of the supernatural. Three eighteenth-century and three nineteenth-century Gothic novels will be studied in an attempt to trace the development of the genre:
Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto (1764) Matthew Lewis, The Monk: A Romance (1796) Anne Radcliffe, The Italian: Or the Confessional of the Black Penitents (1797) Mary Shelley, Frankenstein (1818) R.L.Stevenson, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) Bram Stoker, Dracula (1897)
