The seminar will cover

a) central schools of thought that inspire qualitative researchers, such as hermeneutics and social constructivism

b) key concepts in qualitative inquiry, such as context, lived experience, emic-etic, meaning, typification, interpretation, situatedness, case

c) the positions qualitative researchers take in relation to contemporary methodological issues such as causality, generalization and evidence 

Competency description

The seminar prepares the student to regard the foundations of qualitative inquiry as a set of resources relevant for discussion of central issues in the methodology of social science and as relevant for framing and defining a problem to study, for example a problem to be covered in one´s own Master´s thesis. 

 

Learning Outcome

The goals of this Summer School (seminar) are that students

a) are able to describe and understand key concepts undergirding qualitative inquiry

b) can understand and discuss the methodological and practical consequences of paradigm choices in social science especially when it comes to applying key concepts covered in this course to specific research strategies and methodological choices

c) can justify qualitative approaches in relation to specific research problems and evaluate such justifications

d) can discuss the role of qualitative inquiry in the broader context of social science

e) can reflect about their own position and experience in relation to qualitative inquiry

Students should have passed the methodological course at the Bachelor´s level and should have intellectual curiosity.
