Content

Selected topics in Quantum Mechanics and Statistical Mechanics. Besides fundamental issues the course will focus on more specialized topics depending on the interests and preferences of the participants. Among these topics may be a selection from the following list: spectral theory for unbounded operators, the Schrödinger equation and Stone's theorem, perturbation theory, scattering theory, stability of matter; quantum information theory, many-body systems, and statistical mechanics.

Learning Outcome

Knowledge:

  • Basic concepts and methods used int the mathematical description of quantum systems and/or statistical mechanics. Explicit mathematical models of concrete physical systems in quantum and/or statstical mechanics
     

Skills:

  • To use advanced mathematical tools to extract relevant physical information from well-defined models To do explicit calculations within the framework of advanced mathematical models

 

Competencies:

  • To formulate, understand, and analyze mathematical models of physical systems
FunkAn or DifFun

Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree is recommended.

Some prior knowledge of quantum mechanics is useful
4 hours of lectures and 2 hours of exercises each week for 9 weeks.

One seminar presentation and three written assignments. The student must pass all assignments and the seminar. Assignments can be resubmitted once.

30 minutes oral examination with 30 minutes preparation time. All aids allowed during the preparation time, no aids allowed during the examination. Several internal examiners.
