NIGK14022U Sedimentary Basins - Evolution, Environments and Resources (part 2)
MSc Programme in Geology-Geoscience
The aim of the course is to build on and refine the competences obtained in part 1 of the course. Throughout there will be a strong emphasis on explorational aspects for resources, notably hydrocarbons. The main emphasis is on practical applications of the theoretical basis of basin analysis which was the key subject of part 1.
Part 2 of the course is focused on hands-on exercises, where the student work with real data from seismic profiles, well logs, cores and outcrop data from selected basins. Exercises are backed up by key articles.
Knowledge:
Analysis of sedimentary basin fills based on seismic data, well logs, cores and outcrop data, and the reading of key articles.
Evaluate hydrocarbon potential and explorational aspects for selected sedimentary basins
Skills:
analysis and interpretation of the fill of sedimentary basins by the application of seismic profiles, well logs, cores and outcrop data. Analyses are placed in scientific context by reading key articles.
describe the explorational aspects for hydrocarbons
write a professional-style short, concise report on a selected subject within the framework of basin analysis.
Competences:
build on and refine competences gained in part 1
analysis of selected sedimentary basins by using available seismic data, well logs, cores and outcrop data; knowledge of key literature
evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of selected sedimentary basins
present a selected sedimentary basin case story in a short, concise report
