Curriculum for the Studies in Tibetology The 2007 Curriculum
This course introduces to some of the main works of Indian Buddhist literature. We will read translations of world and secondary literature about them. The topics include the beginnings of writing in India (Ashoka-Inscriptions, Pali Canon), several important and translated works of the Pali Canon (Theravada-Tradition) such as the Jataka-Tales of Buddha's previous births, the life of the Buddha, his teachings on causality, the four noble truths, non-self (Sutra on Questions to King Milinda), nirvana (Mahaparinirvanasutra), meditation, and ethical issues and virtues. Readings in and about several important works of the Mahayana-Tradition include the literature of the Prajnaparamita (extracts from Conze's Book), the Pure Land Sutra, Madhyamaka as a Mahayana School of Thought (Nagarjuna's Mulamadhyamakakarika, Shantideva), Yogacara as a Mahayana School of Thought (Lankavatarasutra) and tantric literature.
