Content

Today, more people live in cities than outside – indeed, we live in a world of cities. How can we study cities in a truly global fashion, beyond the traditionally West-centric perspective? This course introduces the student to a multi-disciplinary field of comparative and cross-cultural studies in urban societies, processes and structures. The focus is on ethnographic, sociological and anthropological approaches to urban life and specifically to the study of urban contention. The case studies are drawn from the Middle East and Asia, where we will look at urban social movements in the last decade (Tahrir/Egypt, Taksim/Istanbul, the Green Movement in Iran, Occupy Hong Kong, etc.). The student will learn to connect micro-processes on the local level to both regional and global processes on the macro-level by applying relevant theories and methods.
