Content

This course is intended as a basic course that provides an introduction to Japanese society, its history and culture after 1945. The course in the spring semester (Introduction to Japanese history, culture, and society 2) will cover the period before 1945. The two courses build upon each other, but each one can also be taken on its own.

Academic targets

At the examination, the student can demonstrate:

Knowledge and understanding of

Japan’s geography and demography and key political, economic, social, and cultural developments in relation to their historical context.

 

Skills in

Explaining and analysing unreflected assumptions and stereotypes that colour attitudes to Japan, such as eurocentrism.

Communicating at a basic scholarly level, particularly in relation to referencing sources and editing bibliographies according to a recognized system.

 

Competencies in

Finding, structuring and critically evaluating information on a topic related to Japan’s history and culture.

 

Syllabus

A syllabus of 600 pages of scientific literature is set by the examiner.

 

Teaching and working methods

Compulsory class instruction with active student participation.

 

Exam provisions

 

Form of exam: Active class participation.

Active class participation is defined as:

At least 75% attendance.

1 set written take-home assignment of maximum 5 standard pages. At least 4 weeks will be given to the assignment.

Assessment: Internal exam with one examiner, Pass/Fail.

Regulations for group exams: This exam can only be taken individually. However, the take-home assignment can be produced by groups (max. 3 students) with individual assessment. If the assignment is a group product, the contribution of each student must be identifiable. The introduction and conclusion can be jointly authored. Extent for group assignments: max. 7.5 pages (2 students) and max 10 pages (3 students).

Exam language(s): Danish or English.

Permitted exam aids: All.

Make-up exam/resit: Set written take-home assignment. 11-15 pages. 7 days.

Special provisions: Make-up exam/resit and exam taken when active class participation is not approved: The written assignment consists of an essay of 11-15 pages in response to 1-4 questions posed by the examiner.
