HENB01155U English - Elective 4, topic 5: Contemporary American Politics, 1988-2016
This course makes an introduction to American politics and the American political system and focuses on the period 1988-2016. Beyond the basic ideas and institutions of the US democracy, students will analyze patterns and differences in local, state, national, and global events during the presidencies of George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Because 2016 is a presidential election year, the most current contours of political changes or continuities will be on full display—and open for discussion. Issues of religion, partisanship, immigration, health care, old age, wars and rumors of wars, equality, freedom, and order will be analyzed weekly.
Readings include weekly assignments in online sources as well the most current political science/history text available.
