In this course we will consider certain of the literary and cultural currents of the decade of the 1950s in the United States. We will examine representative works of fiction and poetry, including works by Norman Mailer, Saul Bellow, J.D. Salinger, Jack Kerouac, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison and Robert Lowell. If time permits, we will view and discuss Elia Kazan’s film, “On the Waterfront.”
