The terror of history. Cultural memory and the politics of remembering Europe’s painful past
Europe’s twentieth century created a massive legacy of painful, complex and hugely divisive memories. The two World Wars, the Holocaust and other cases of genocide remain at the centre of cultural and collective remembering in Europe. Moreover, memories of the crimes of Fascism and Stalinist communism are hotly disputed and sometimes become the topics of what some scholars have called ‘memory wars’. Among the numerous examples of such memory disputes are the discussions in the European Parliament about how and when to remember Holocaust and the crimes of Stalinism and other totalitarian regimes, the confrontations between Russians and Estonians about the memory of the Second World War and the role of the Red Army, represented by the so- Bronze Soldier statue in Talinn, and the mutual accusations between Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia about crimes committed both during the Second World War and the wars of the 1990s.
Memory wars within and between different countries are played out in history writing and literature, in popular culture and political debates and in courts and tribunals. This course looks at a number of such memory wars and the ways they are fought between different countries and in different media. Drawing on a wide selection of theories of cultural and collective memory, we will investigate how we may analyse and understand such memory wars.
