AØKK08362U Seminar: Advanced Finance (F)

Volume 2017/2018
Education

MSc programme in Economics

The seminar is primarily for students at the MSc of Economics

The course is a part of the financial line, signified by (F)

Content

The purpose of this seminar is for participants to identify and clarify advanced problems in the field of Finance. The chosen problems and methods should directly build on one of the F-marked courses in the Master’s programme, with the exception of the broader Corporate Finance and Incentives. The topic should have been broadly introduced in a lecture of such a course. The seminar then allows a deeper investigation of the problem, advancing the coverage of the topic beyond what was in the course.

Learning Outcome

Topics are chosen in agreement with the seminar’s lecturer. It is the intention to form two classes, one with more theoretical methods, and one with more empirical methods. A perfect split may not be feasible.

Students have extensive freedom to choose from financial topics that have already been introduced in an F-marked lecture course. Consult the syllabi of those courses in the course catalogue for inspiration.

Students are recommended to have already taken at least one F-marked course beyond Corporate Finance and Incentives. The literature in such a course forms the basis for the individual paper writing.

Students are recommended to have already followed at least one F-marked course beyond Corporate Finance and Incentives. Exchange students and others who have studied away from the Department should select one of our courses’ topics, to which they have already been exposed during their course of study.

A list of relevant courses, of which it is also recommended to have followed at least one:

Planning/start-up meeting, research and writing process of the seminar paper, sessions with presentation of own paper and critical evaluation/feedback to another student´s paper, actively participating in discussions at class.

Before the session a "so-finalized-as-possible"-draft of the paper must be uploaded in Absalon. After the presentations, the student submit an edited version of the paper in the Digital Exam portal as the final exam paper. The aim is that students use the presentation sessions as an opportunity to receive and use the constructive feedback to improve the paper.
