Marx's comprehensive theory of capitalism, like capitalism itself, has proven to be highly malleable and adaptable. As a result, social scientists inherit and engage a complicated body of Marxist thought which has developed into specific branches of Marxism. This class will survey schools of Marxist thought through "conversations" with key Marxists who have shaped the development of Marxist theory and our understanding of society. We will focus on how these Marxists have expanded, challenged or modified Marx's theory of class and class conflict, his concept of exploitation, the role of ideology and his theory of social change. We will read original (canonical) texts accompanied by supplementary pieces engaging in debates as a way to map out some important nodes in this complex and rich theoretical tradition.
