Content

The students will take active part in the daily work in the University Hospital of Large Animals under direction of the responsible veterinarians. The daily language in the hospital is Danish but all staff members are familiar with English and will speak English with the students. Several staff members are native English or American speaking.

The Large Animal Hospital has elective cases and emergency patients. Furthermore the Hospital has a mobile practice

It will be possible for the students to work during daytime and/or during evening and night shifts in the hospital.
 

Daytime working hours: 8.00 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.

Evening working hours: 3.30 p.m. – 12.00 a.m.

Weekend working hours: 8.00 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.

Night working hours: On call at the Hospital

Clinical training can be within the following rotations (at least one full week for each rotation):

- Large Animal Hospital (medicine and surgery)
- Mobile practice

The students will be asked to compile a list of preferred rotations. However the final planning will be made by the course responsible with no guaranty of preferred rotations

Learning Outcome

During the course, the student will get the possibility to achieve first hand experience within one or more of the above mentioned clinical rotations at the University Hospital of Large Animals.

Knowledge:
- Describe common medical and surgical diseases in large animal general practice
- Describe the problem based clinical examination and interpretation methodolgy when diagnosing a patient in large animal clinical practice

Skills:
- Apply the problembased medical investigatory system to the large animal patient
- Perform a full clinical investigation of a companion animal patient
- Determine and justify diagnostic and treatment plans as well as prognosis for a specific patient.
- Choose, justify and interpretate relevant paraclinical- and clinical tests
- Take and in pratice process diagnostic samples

Competencies:
- Identify, evaluate and interpretate elements of a clinical case to be able to compile and implement diagnostic and- therapeutic plans.
- Use professional communication by implementing correct medical terminology

Relevant literature within large animal practice

The students have to be on their last year of veterinary study.
Practical clinical training
Students must bring stethoscope, thermometer, scissors, appropriate disinfectable footwear such as rubber boots, blue scrubs, lab coat and note block/pencil.

Criteria for exam assesment

To achieve the grade passed, the student shall (in an adequate level) be able to:

Knowledge:

- Describe common medical and surgical diseases in large animal general practice
- Describe the problem based clinical examination and interpretation methodology when diagnosing a     patient in large animal clinical practice

- Identify causes of frequently occurring medical, surgical and production-related diseases in large animals

Skills:
- Prepare proper records and keep continuous records in a satisfactory manner understandable to colleagues and the public
- Perform a full clinical investigation of a companion animal and production animal patient
- Determine and justify diagnostic and treatment plans as well as prognosis for a specific patient.
- Choose, justify and interpretate relevant paraclinical- and clinical tests
- Take and in practice process diagnostic samples

- Work effectively in teams


Competencies:
- Identify, evaluate and interpretate elements of a clinical case to be able to compile and implement diagnostic and- therapeutic plans.
- Use professional communication by implementing correct medical terminology

- Handling and restraint of animals correctly and safely, and could instruct others therein

- Participate in emergency work and perform basic first aid

- Taking, storing and handling specimens, perform standard laboratory tests and interpret the results of the various laboratory tests

- Apply the principles for aseptic surgery
