Content

The summer school will provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of the most common diseases and treatments within internal medicine. Invited speakers will share insights into the latest research, future developments and treatments. The focus will be on participation and dialogue, including different innovative educational methods intended to optimize learning outcome. The objective of the course is to provide a thorough understanding of primarily acute but also non-acute conditions and thus make the students more prepared for life as a junior doctor.

The summer school is a two weeks course. The following topics are taught on the course: 

Nephrology, endocrinology, gastrointestinal diseases, oncology, hematology, cardiology, infectious and pulmonary medicine.

Review articles from academic journals

International and Danish medical students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree or have completed a minimum of three years of medical studies.
The courses will combine lectures by invited speakers, interactive seminars and group work. The course is based on active student participation.
All the teaching will be held in English.

Practical written examination, 7 hours
Mandatory elements: Active participation during the course and participation in a practical written examination in groups with an oral presentation.
Students are awarded a certificate from the University of Copenhagen once they have passed the mandatory elements.

Criteria for exam assesment

To obtain the assessment passed the student must demonstrate the following abilities at a sufficient level:

Knowledge

Cardiology

  • Explain the pathophysiology, treatment and diagnostics in chronic heart failure.
  • Explain stable ischemic heart disease. 
  • Analyze systematically an electrocardiography (ECG) with focus on ischemic heart disease and arrhythmias.
  • Define and explain the most common types of supraventricular arrhythmias.   
     

Pulmonary medicine 

  • Explain basic lung physiology in relation to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and asthma.
  • Systematically analyze an arterial blood gas analysis.
  • Discuss the most common causes of pulmonary nodules.
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of the diagnostics of acute respiratory failure.
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of treatment of the various courses of a pulmonary nodule.

 

Infectious medicine

  • Explain the pathophysiology of sepsis and its main causes.
  • Explain treatment and causes of lung infections, ventral nervous infections and Human Immunodeficiency Virus.   


Oncology and hematology

  • Explain the basic pathophysiology and risk factors for developing cancer.
  • Obtain a basic understanding of cancer epidemiology, diagnostics, staging and treatment.
  • Obtain basic knowledge of the most common cancer types in developed countries. 
     

Nephrology

  • Explain the different pathophysiological causes of acute kidney failure
  • Explain the causes of hyperkalemia
  • Explain and discuss causes and consequences of dehydration.
  • Explain the pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease.  
     

Endocrinology

  • Obtain a basic understanding of diagnostics, treatment, and pathophysiology of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Explain the most common causes of abnormalities in the calcium metabolism
  • Explain the pathophysiology of pituitary and adrenal insufficiency and the clinical consequences.
  • Understand symptoms of thyroid disorders and interpret relevant blood work. 
     

Gastrointestinal diseases

  • Explain the pathophysiology of peptic ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Explain the most common causes of diarrhea and malabsorption and irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Explain the causes of cirrhosis and chronic liver failure as well as the clinical and paraclinical changes found in relation to these conditions.


Skills

Cardiology

  • Recognize acute ischemic heart disease from symptoms, blood work and changes of electrocardiography.
  • Recognize symptoms and paraclinical signs of stable angina and chronic heart failure. 
  • Recognize patients with clinical or paraclinical signs of arrhythmias.

 

Pulmonary medicine

  • Recognize, diagnose and treat patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.
  • Recognize common pathologies on a chest X-ray.
  • Have a systematic diagnostic approach in patients with pulmonary nodules.

 

Infectious medicine

  • Have a systematic approach in patients presenting with fever or other signs of infections.
  • Interpret most common paraclinical tests for infections such as blood work, blood culture and lumbar puncture.
  • Order relevant testing in patients presenting with signs of infections after travelling 
     

Oncology and hematology

  • Recognize symptoms of the most common cancer types and start basic diagnostics and basic as well as more advanced testing.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of treatment, prognosis and side effects of treatment.
  • Recognize major complications to chemotherapy and acute oncological conditions.

 

Nephrology

  • Interpret relevant blood work and the symptoms presenting in patients with chronic kidney disease.
  • Recognize the criteria for ordering hemodialysis for patients with acute kidney failure.

 

Endocrinology

  • Have a diagnostic approach in patients with abnormal thyroid hormones and patients suspected of having diabetes.
  • Know how and when to treat patients with adrenal insufficiency 
     

Gastrointestinal diseases

  • Have a diagnostic approach in patients with symptoms such as diarrhea or bloody stools.
  • Diagnose liver failure and knowing when to contact a hepatologist for specialized treatment. 
     

Oncology and hematology

  • Recognize symptoms of the most common cancer types and start basic as well as more advanced testing.
  • Recognize major complications to chemotherapy and acute oncological conditions. 
     

Competencies

Cardiology

  • Initiate treatment for acute ischemic heart disease and acute heart failure.
  • Initiate acute and long-term treatment of the most common supraventricular arrhythmias.


Pulmonary medicine

  • Initiate treatment for acute respiratory failure from the initial evaluation.
  • Initiate acute and long term treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma.


Infectious medicine

  • Initiate diagnostics and treatment of patients presenting with sepsis.
  • Initiate treatment and diagnose patients with infections of the central nervous system or lung infections. 
     

Nephrology

  • Use a diagnostic approach in acute kidney failure and initiate relevant treatment.
  • Diagnose and treat acute hyperkalemia.
  • Recognize and treat patients with chronic kidney disease depending on severity.

 

Endocrinology

  • Initiate basic treatment in patients with ketoacidosis and severe hyperglycemia.
  • Diagnose and treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Initiate basic testing for thyroid abnormalities and patients presenting with signs of pituitary or adrenal insufficiency.

 

Gastrointestinal diseases

  • Use a systematic approach in patients presenting with liver failure and start relevant treatment.
  • Diagnose and treat acute bleeding of the gastrointestinal system and start relevant diagnostics and treatment. 
     

Oncology and hematology

  • Start basic diagnostics in patients where cancer is suspected.
  • Start basic diagnostics and treatment of acute oncological conditions.
